Privacy vs permissions

Privacy decides who can see a poem. Permissions decide what those readers can do with it. You set both in the composer's Settings tab, and you can change permissions at any time after publishing.

Per-poem permissions

Allow comments

Lets readers write letters (replies) to your poem. Turn it off to close the correspondence. The poem stays visible; readers just can't write to it.

Allow reactions

Lets readers Cheer, Encore or Tomato your poem. Turn it off to switch off reactions on this piece.

Margin notes

On by default. Readers can leave notes on individual lines once your poem settles. Turning it off closes the margin. Notes already written are never deleted: they move into the correspondence with their quoted line.

Open to reading lists

Lets other poets add this poem to their lists. You're notified when someone does. Turning it off stops new additions only; lists that already hold the poem keep it. Your own lists are never affected.

Allow translation

Lets readers who don't share your language read a clearly labelled machine translation, with your original one tap away. Turn it off and readers who can't read your language won't be offered a translation at all. See "Translating a Poem".

Show who reacted

Lets readers see who cheered, encored, reposted and quoted the poem. It's on by default; you'll find it in the poem's settings when you edit it after publishing. Counts always show, and you always see the names. See "Who Reacted: Interaction Lists".

Account-wide defaults

Some permissions also have a default for new pieces, under Settings › Privacy:

• Let others add my work to lists
• Let readers translate my work

A piece follows your default unless you change it in the composer, where you'll see "From your account default" or "Just this piece". Changing a default only affects new pieces; anything you've already published keeps its own setting.

Critiques

Whether others may write critiques of your published poems is set once for your profile: Settings › Privacy › Allow critiques. Critiques open after the settling window, like margin notes.

When can I change these?

Permissions, privacy, content warnings and appearance stay editable for good. Only the title and text lock, once the settling period (currently 30 minutes) ends. To change permissions on a published poem, open it, choose Edit, and go to Settings.
