StanzaHelp Center

Stanza has one podcast player, and it follows you. Start an episode anywhere (the directory, a show page, a list, a card in your feed) and it keeps playing while you browse, until you pause it, close it or start something else.

Finding shows

Podcasts opens a directory with a pick of the week, Continue listening, New episodes, Popular this week, episodes from poets you follow, a mood picker, categories and All shows. A shelf with nothing to show hides. See all opens the full list for any shelf. Shows and episodes are only listed if you are allowed to open them.

The player

  • Resume: Stanza remembers where you stopped, on any device, and marks an episode In progress or Played (95 percent through counts). A finished episode starts again from the beginning.
  • Skip back 15 seconds, forward 30. Speed from 0.75× to 2×, remembered on this device for every episode.
  • The waveform is drawn from the real audio. Until it has been analysed you see a plain bar.
  • The mini player stays with you. On a phone it sits above the menu bar; open the Stanza menu and it moves into the sheet, where you can minimise it into a ring around your profile picture. On a computer it sits at the foot of the sidebar. Only × stops the audio.
  • On a phone, the lock screen, notification and headset controls work too.

Sleep timer

Set Off, End of episode, or 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The last 20 seconds fade the volume. End of episode stops there and does not start the next one. The timer is not saved between visits.

Play next

Add an episode to Play next to line up what comes after the current one: up to 25, kept on this device. Adding the same episode again moves it; an episode you cannot play is skipped. The queue moves on only when an episode finishes by itself.

Transcripts, chapters and notes

  • An episode shows a Transcript tab only when it has one. The transcript highlights as you listen only when it has real timings.
  • A time in the show notes (such as 14:32) becomes a chapter you can tap to jump to.
  • Press and hold a line (or select it on a computer) for Quote, Note, Copy and Play from here. Quote makes a share card in square or story size from one or two adjacent lines, up to 280 characters. Note leaves a margin note on that moment; the host can switch notes off.
  • A link ending in ?t= with a time opens the episode cued at that moment. It does not start playing until you press Play.

Content warnings

An episode with a content warning is covered like a poem, and its Play stays off until you choose Show. See “Content warnings on Stanza”.
