Anyone can start an Inner Circle. You become its owner, and you decide who can get in and how the circle runs.

Starting your circle

  1. Open Circles and choose New Circle.
  2. Give it a name (2–100 characters) and an optional description (up to 500 characters) that tells people what the circle is for.
  3. Add an emblem (a small icon) and a banner (a header image) if you like.
  4. Choose an entry mode (see below) and, if needed, a password.
  5. Choose Create Circle.

You are automatically the circle's owner, and also one of its admins.

Entry modes: how people get in

Every circle has a door. Choose how it opens:

  • Approval — people knock, and an admin approves or declines each request. This is the default.
  • Password — anyone who knows the password gets in straight away.
  • Password + Approval — people need the password and an admin's approval.

Passwords must be at least 4 characters. Share them only with people you want inside.

tip

Whatever the entry mode, admins can always invite people directly. An invitation lets someone skip knocking.

Circle settings

Change these any time from the circle's settings:

  • Discoverable — show the circle in the circle directory so people can find it and knock. Off by default; a circle that is not discoverable can only be found by people who are invited or already members.
  • Enable Critiques and Critics Only — let members write critiques within the circle, or limit critiques to members you have given the critic role.
  • Ban on leave — if this is on, people who leave the circle, or are removed from it, cannot rejoin. Use it for circles where membership should be a firm commitment.
  • Emblem, Banner and Social Links — how the circle presents itself.

Choose Save Changes when you are done.

Plan limits

The free plan has limits on how many circles you can belong to and how many members a circle can have. Stanza Pro raises them. If you reach a limit, Stanza tells you before anything is lost.

Deleting a circle

Only the owner can delete a circle, from Delete Circle in its settings. Deletion is permanent, so be sure before you confirm.

note

There is currently no way to hand ownership of a circle to someone else, and the owner cannot leave their own circle. If you want someone else to run it, make them an admin.
